Gender equality is often spoken about as if it is a fight that belongs only to women. But in reality, it is much larger than that. It is not just about how many times women have to stand up for themselves. It is about how willing men are to take responsibility and actively participate in creating a fair society.
In many households, responsibilities are not equally shared. Women are expected to manage cooking, cleaning, laundry, and care-giving, regardless of whether they are also studying or working.
A daughter returning home tired from school is often asked to handle chores on her own, while a son in the same situation is given rest and comfort. Even small decisions reflect this imbalance—such as buying a mobile phone first for the younger son instead of the elder daughter.
From a young age, society conditions children to associate certain roles with gender. Cooking is seen as “women’s work,” while men are encouraged to rely on women for basic responsibilities. Over time, this creates a system where men enjoy privileges without question, while women must constantly prove themselves and seek permission for their choices — whether it is going out, pursuing a career, or making personal decisions.
Women are often told they are “princesses,” but are treated as if they must carry the weight of the household. They are encouraged to dream, but within limits — almost like being told they can fly, but only inside a cage. True equality does not come from allowing limited freedom; it comes from removing those invisible boundaries altogether.

At the same time, there is a difficult reality within this issue: not all women support one another. Despite facing similar struggles, some women continue to reinforce the same expectations placed upon them. However, there are also many who stand together, support each other, and push for change. Their efforts highlight the importance of unity in addressing inequality.
A powerful example of this perspective was shared by Emma Watson during the HeForShe campaign. She emphasized that gender equality is not just a women’s issue, but a human issue. Her message encouraged men to step forward, not as bystanders, but as active participants in achieving equality.
Ultimately, change cannot rest solely on women fighting for their rights. Every home must recognise the importance of sharing responsibilities equally. Gender equality begins with everyday actions — how families treat their children, how responsibilities are divided, and how respect is practised.
