Our exclusive focus on marks is a problem

Written by Suresh Kumar Earala (Sem. II)

INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM runs entirely on merit / grades. The JEE, NET, NEET, various CETs, etc. are all designed for the same purpose. These days, some companies are also hiring employees based on the scores in 10th and 12th class.

Is this necessary? Will any of the stuff people learned in 10th and 12th be useful in the job? If the whole country runs on marks scored in a written exam, what about practicality?

The education system and the companies should not place so much emphasis on marks alone, because every student is gifted, with something unique to contribute. Some might be good in academics but some may not be.

Marks alone cannot be the basis to judge a child. Because of this, students just focus on memorising for the exams, so that they get good marks. That is how our system is. What is the purpose of CBSE and all the education boards? They record only marks and nothing else.

There are many ways to enhance the Indian education system. Everyone should not be forced to study the whole range of subjects. Right from 9th or 8th, the students should select what subjects they have an interest in, and pursue them. They should be able to choose what subjects and how many they would like to study.

A little practicality in our education will be much appreciated.
