KALKI 2898 AD, projected as an epic science-fiction film, builds on exceptional technical work and delivers outstanding action sequences. The climax sequence, especially, is one of the greatest cinematic experiences ever, with each department — visuals, drama, action and music — giving their best to create an extravaganza.
Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film stars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani. Inspired by Hindu scriptures, it is the first instalment in a planned Kalki cinematic universe.
The movie is set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898, and proceeds around a select group who are on a mission to save lab subject SUM-80’s unborn child Kalki from supreme Yaskin.
After a slow-paced first half, the film picks up significantly in the second half. The director maintains the pace with well-timed cameos. The climax is where the film reaches its peak.
The film’s action choreography is top notch. The scenes with supercar Bujji are executed exceptionally well, and the face-off between Amitabh Bachchan and Prabhas is a key highlight.
The background music could have been better in some scenes, and the first half could have been improved. Screenplay is solid and the cinematography is outstanding.
Prabhas’s character is well designed and is the face of the film. Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwathama delivers one of his best performances in recent times. Deepika mesmerises the audience with her performance. Even though Kamal Haasan has a short screen time, he excels in his role.
In conclusion, Kalki 2898 AD is a masterpiece in Indian cinema, and opens the doors for Indian films to showcase our stories to the world. Nag Ashwin and the entire cast and crew deserve appreciation. They tell a gripping story with technical finesse.
The movie is streaming on Netflix.
